BT rings changes for marketers

British Telecom is anticipating a "massive increase" in the number of direct marketers using its 0800 and 0345 numbers after its most radical revamp yet of the five-year-old LinkLine service.

As part of a much-publicised modernisation programme of BT's UK network, the free and local rate lines are now available to businesses which do not wish to rent dedicated lines.

This means that LinkLine charges will be reduced to a minimum of 50 [pounds] per quarter, compared with the previous minimum 100 [pounds] per quarter.

Businesses connected to a digital exchange will now have access to the full range of LinkLine services such as Call Diversion, Call Waiting, Three-Way Calling and the recently introduced Advanced LinkLine option.

BT claims the service can be delivered within ten days compared with up to three months for dedicated lines.

BT describes the move as "incredibly significant" and hopes it will make the LinkLine service more attractive to smaller firms. "The whole thing is much more flexible and should make life easier for direct marketers, since it's now possible to have a line up and running at short notice", says a spokeswoman. …
