* I am a Benedictine sister and a professional counselor who worked daily for two years with children and adult victim/survivors of sexual abuse. Thus, I believe I have sufficient life and professional experience to qualify as something of an authority on the subject. In reading Charles Eckroth's remarks regarding people who deny guilt (NCR, Jan 24), I was reminded of how often, during those two years and since, I have encountered that phenomenon. Granted, some of these people may indeed be innocent, but from the suffering I encountered in my many clients, I tend to believe their number is quite small and that more often those who have actually abused children are in deep denial regarding their behavior. Indeed, this seems to be a concomitant part of the illness. And now, turning to the behavior of those children who returned to that cabin several times and were seen "smiling," Mr. Eckroth obviously has not had much contact with victims. …
