'The Great Lawn Mower Sidewalk Fiasco'. (over Easy)

Tim La Fan, town attorney for Winfield, W.Va., calls it the "great lawn mower sidewalk fiasco--the crime that never was a crime."

Under an adjusted town ordinance, riding lawn mowers can be driven on Winfield's city sidewalks for the furtherance of lawn maintenance only.

"This is small town U.S.A. government at its best," Mayor Jake Hunt told Mike Connolly of the Charleston Daily Mail.

For five months, Winfield's town council has debated what to do about riding lawn mowers that are driven on a sidewalk. A past town ordinance barred all vehicles from the sidewalks, but police officers had always looked the other way when it came to lawn mowers.

But last October on Putnam Homecoming Day, a police officer stopped a man driving a mower down the sidewalk. A ticket was never issued, but the implied threat was there.

At the next council meeting, the room was filled with people upset that tickets would be issued for driving a lawn mower along a sidewalk, Hunt told the Daily Mail reporter. …
