Western Union bares all in UK push

The 150-year-old US financial services company, Western Union, is using a naked man in its first ever UK ad campaign to extol the benefits of its cash transfer services.

The first phase of a 2m [pounds] ad campaign through agency Abbott Mead Vickers SMS broke on TV at the weekend. In it a naked man strides through the streets of San Francisco and collects a fistful of dollars from a Western Union agent. The strapline reads: "For when you're caught without anything on you."

It aims to demonstrate the principle of sending cash by "wire" around the country. Western Union - which transferred more than $3bn in the US last year - has set up 400 UK agents. Managing director Michael Taylor says 1000 will be signed up by the year end.

Taylor says the commercials have a difficult jot to do. They have to create awareness for both the Western Union name and the service it provides. …
