AA warned on tobacco lobby New research and a warning from a top European MP this week have called into question the Advertising Association's (AA) attempt to fight off a blanket ban on tobacco advertising and sponsorship.

The research, part of the weekly Marketing Forum survey, shows that most top advertisers now support a ban on UK tobacco advertising.

This contradicts the AA view that most advertisers back the tobacco industry.

A clear majority of the marketing directors and managers questioned also believe an outright ban is inevitable this decade.

At the same time, Ken Collins, the chairman of the European Parliament's committee on the environment, public health and consumer protection, warned the UK advertising industry this week to withdraw its support from tobacco manufacturers.

The industry runs the risk of provoking a backlash among European civil servants and parliamentarians because of their robust opposition to an outright ban on tobacco advertisements proposed in an EC directive, the Labour MEP told the AA's AGM this week. …
