Comet Group is the UK's second-biggest electrical retailer. It is part of the Kingfisher group that operates in DIY and electricals, with supporting e-commerce divisions.

The electrical division is Kingfisher SA, based in Paris.

It spans nine countries and operates 824 stores focusing on four elements: price, after-sale, culture and property.

Comet was founded in 1933 by George Hollingberry, who began the business by offering a radio rental service. The first Comet superstore opened in Hull in 1968 and the company went public in 1970.

In 1984, Comet was taken over by Kingfisher for pounds 129m.

Kingfisher has achieved leading positions in France, the UK, Poland and Turkey.

In January 2002, Comet announced plans to open 70 stores around the UK over the next five years, creating more than 3000 jobs. It plans to open 14 stores each year until 2007.

In April 2002, the retailer began a programme to recycle old or disused mobile phones. Comet customers are able to mail their phones, whether they were purchased in a Comet store or not, in free, pre-paid envelopes to be recycled.

The initiative was launched in conjunction with XS Tronix, an environmental telecommunications company, which recycles the phones. …
