MEDIA: Time Names IPC Media Chief Executive

Time Inc has announced that Sylvia Auton, managing director of IPC's Country & Leisure Group, is to be chief executive of IPC Media, the UK's biggest consumer publishing company.

Auton, 53, an IPC Media lifer, replaces Sly Bailey, who quit earlier this year to join Trinity Mirror as chief executive. She will report to Time Inc executive vice-president and chief financial officer Richard Atkinson.

Auton is believed to have faced stiff competition from a strong line-up of potential candidates, both internal and external.

An IPC Media spokeswoman said Auton scooped the top job because she understands the synergies between the IPC and Time Inc businesses. She added: 'Sylvia knows how to drive the value of brands and Time Inc is all about delivery.'

As managing director of the Country & Leisure Group, Auton headed its biggest division, which comprises 50 specialist titles, ranging from Cage & Aviary Birds, Amateur Photographer, Yachting World and Country Life to web sites and books.

In recent years, the division has endured the effects of the foot and mouth epidemic on Britain's countryside and the impact of global recession on titles devoted to expensive pursuits, such as boating. …
