What attracted you to the job at the Society?

Primarily it was my love of geography But I also had a desire to help promote greater access to, and interest in, the Society's fascinating collections of maps, pictures, books and artefacts relating to the history of geography and exploration. With the Unlocking the Archives project up and running, this is an important and exciting time in the Society's development, so it's great to be a part of it.

What does your job involve?

I lead the Information Services and Resources Division. At the moment the team is busy working to move our catalogue of heritage materials from 250,000 card index files to a computerised system. It's a massive job, but by this time next year it will be possible to search the collection via the internet.

What did your last job involve?

For the past three years I have been responsible for the Commonwealth Institute's education programme and for bringing together the work of its school team, exhibition department, library and fundraising-development department. I think this experience will serve me well in my new position, given the Society's goals of using its resources for education and lifelong learning. …
