Pharmacist Stars in National Campaign of 'Local Heroes'

An Ohio pharmacist who helps make dreams come true for critically ill children is the star of a national ad campaign saluting local heroes.

Randy Mack, a pharmacist in the West Union, Ohio, Wal-Mart store, was selected to appear in the first ads in a campaign sponsored by Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories. As v.p. of the Dream Factory of Southern Ohio, Mack focuses on fund-raising and administrative work. The group's mission is to fulfill the wishes of chronically and terminally ill children, whether it's a special trip, a visit with a celebrity, or a special toy.

The ad, which ran in five national magazines in June and July, featured Mack holding a smiling Jessica Ann Latham, who has leukemia. The three-year-old has been touched by the pharmacist's professional care and community activism. She is a patient at Mack's Wal-Mart pharmacy, and the Dream Factory provided the special computer system she had her heart set on.

"We probably took 80 pictures that day, and she's grinning ear-to-ear in every one," said Mack, who is also WalMart's R.Ph. of the year. …
