* The Foreign & Commonwealth Office has announced that Sir Peter Ricketts will take over as permanent secretary after Sir Michael Jay retires this summer. Ricketts is currently the UK's permanent representative at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

* Fire-related deaths are continuing to fall, according to statistics from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. The toll in Britain in the 12 months up to June 30 last year was 484 - the lowest since 1958.

* CIPFA is seeking nominations from its members for two of the three seats allocated to it on the council of the Association of Accounting Technicians. Those interested should contact Barry Mather at CIPFA on 020 7543 5669 or access the institute's website for details of the selection process. The deadline for nominations is March 17, 2006.
