Government Should Do More to Boost Voluntary Sector Involvement, Says PAC

Government departments have made only 'limited' progress in increasing voluntary sector involvement in public services, the Commons Public Accounts Committee has found.

Commenting on the PAC's report, Working with the voluntary sector, committee member Helen Goodman MP said that although the government had indicated its desire to create new opportunities for the voluntary sector, 'the worthy aspirations of ministers are often undermined by bureaucratic failure'.

In the report the committee argues that the skills and experience of the voluntary sector mean that it is sometimes 'best placed to deliver a service', particularly to socially excluded groups. The PAC said although the government was on track to meet its target 5% increase in voluntary sector involvement, this represented only a limited challenge' and should be revised. …
