* The Commons public administration select committee is to investigate the way peerages are awarded after ministers denied that party donors could expect elevation to the House of Lords. The committee says it will examine the issue as part of its ethics inquiry.

* Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Trust is to cut 185 posts and shut an operating theatre to reduce a £2m deficit Job cuts will affect the Edith Cavell, Peterborough General and Stamford hospitals at all levels from doctors to cleaning staff. The trust is hoping to avoid compulsory redundancies.
