From Nebraska to Stuttgart: A Journey into the German Way of Education

FAR FROM HIS HOME IN NEBRASKA, adviser Steve Hoiberg recently had a chance to explore the complex workings of a vastly different educational system. What he found was that the differences shed light on many facets of his own work with study abroad and international students.

Hoiberg, an adviser with the program for international professional development at the University of NebraskaOmaha, was one of 18 U.S. educational representatives selected to participate last fall in the annual Baden-Württemberg Seminar, which is held on the campus of the University of Stuttgart in Stuttgart, Germany.

The seminar, which took place November 6-13, 2005, provides an intensive and hands-on look at the German educational system, German-American academic equivalencies, and student exchange between Germany and the United States. Eighteen international educators participated in the seminar, which is sponsored by the Baden-Wiirttemberg Ministry of Science, Research and Art, with the participation of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) and NAFSA.

Hoiberg said the seminar helped drive home the notion that the German education system is multi-pronged and diverse. This, in turn, expanded his understanding of the importance of providing customized attention to all of his student advisees.

"Each individual student that we accept has to be treated independently because there may be something about their educational program that is different from that of another student admitted earlier," he said, noting that 10 students from Germany are currently studying at the University of NebraskaOmaha. …
