Michael Petty enlists his prized Seagull dreadnought to lead his church congregation in singing praises.

WHO HE IS Michael M. Petty is pastor at Spirit and Truth Baptist Church in Elon, North Carolina. He's also a full-time electrician, husband, and father of four kids-with whom he hopes to one day form a bluegrass-gospel band. Now 31, Petty picked up the guitar 12 years ago after hearing his future wife, Jennifer, and brother-in-law play and sing beautiful harmonies. "I was so inspired that evening," he recalls. "I was on my way to pick up Jennifer for a date and arrived a little early, catching the end of their rehearsal. I was floored. I told myself I'd learn to do that." He borrowed his dad's guitar and started learning the basics-G, C, and D chords. Petty was hooked almost immediately and before long began writing his own songs; today singing and playing are twin passions of his, especially at church. "In a given performance," he notes, "I'll swing from contemporary Christian to traditional gospel tunes." Among his guitar influences, he cites fingerstylist Michael Card, Mac Powell of Third Day, and folk-rock songwriter Keith Minor.
