A jury has sided with a California pharmacist who contended that he was fired after he blew the whistle on his supervisor for allegedly dispensing excessive amounts of anabolic steroids.

Nabil Daoud, R.Ph., was awarded $155,000 in general and punitive damages in June by a Los Angeles civil court jury at the conclusion of a two-week trial over his termination by Smith's Food and Drug Centers. He filed suit against the Salt Lake City-based chain, which he charged fired him after he informed district and regional managers that his pharmacy manager was dispensing excessive amounts of anabolic steroids at the Lakewood, Calif. store. The Rxs in question had been written for two male bodybuilders by an obstetrician/gynecologist.

"The pharmacy manager was dispensing two anabolic steroids at the same time in outrageous quantities, 200 a month," said Daoud. "I gave the district regional managers notes the pharmacy manager had written to me warning that I would be fired and threatening bodily injury if I didn't go along. …
