Great Article on Change Management

THANKS FOR THE GREAT cover article in the July '96 issue titled "Expert Advice on How To Move Forward With Chane." I particularly enjoyed the information from Walter Oliver, senior vice president human resources at Ameritech. It's so much more difficult to change a large organization-and Ameritech seems to have done so successfully.

While I enjoyed the article, I do have two comments; one has to do with emphasis and the other with omission.

The article talked about vision and values, but only in passing. My experience with change tells me that these are the keys to a successful change project. You must know where you want to go before you attempt to get there. Vision and values provide the direction. Without a clear definition, provided by the senior managers, no change program will be successful.

There was no mention of timing and again, my experience indicates that change projects can take several years to be successful. …
