* A-level exams should be made more challenging, says the top examination official in England. Ken Boston, chief executive of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, said there was a need to discriminate more effectively between the highest-performing pupils.

* Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust is aiming to save more than £10m over the next year by cutting more than 300 jobs - more than 7% of the workforce. Chief executive Peter Coles said he hoped most would be achieved through early retirement and voluntary redundancy.

* Cardiff International Airport has launched a £100m 24-year strategy to quadruple passenger numbers from 1.9 million a year to 8 million by 2030. The expansion plans were drawn up in response to a government white paper on air transport.
