Training for the jASCorp Encounter pharmaceutical care program begins with a three-day seminar that emphasizes training for the pharmacy's technicians, as well as for pharmacists. Training sessions are held at various sites throughout the country, and in Dallas, near jASCorp's home office.

June M. Adams, owner of Adams Pharmacy and Home Care in Opelika, Ala., attended the seminar two years ago with about 40 other pharmacists. "Training is the key to being able to provide pharmaceutical care," Adams said. "Many think that pharmaceutical care is just software, but implementing the software is the last step in the process; training is the first step."

The seminar includes an extensive introduction to pharmaceutical care, training for implementing a new work flow, and the hiring and training of technicians. Seminars are also held to train the technicians who will take over dispensing and other nonpatient care roles. "That's critical," Adams noted. "I've talked to many other pharmacists who don't understand that changing the work flow is vital if you want to provide pharmaceutical care efficiently."

Training to improve communications skills is also included. Advanced training follows the seminar, focusing on patient management skill-building, disease state management, and software training. …
