In 1859, Charles Darwin published a book that forever changed the way people interpret the development of life on this planet. On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection was embraced by some as enlightened thought and rejected by others as heresy. Though some still reject his theories, none can dispute the fact that Darwin's postulations have had a profound impact upon our contemporary world.

Today, Darwin's concepts and terms are used to describe not only the development of the species but also that of society, the arts, sports, architecture, science, and especially business. It's common to describe changes in these fields as evolutions. What Darwin first called "natural selection" has evolved into "survival of the fittest," a phrase used to describe any situation in which only the strong survive.

It seems fitting that pharmacy, which has undergone many transformations, should be described in Darwinian terms. The profession appears to be a living, breathing organism unto itself, which has mutated several times to survive. …
