The career path and job description of England's 47,000 mental health nurses should be changed to meet the needs of patients better and comply with new legislation on disability discrimination, the chief nursing officer has recommended.

It recommends that mental health nurses should spend less time on administrative tasks and take on new responsibilities to promote physical wellbeing as well as mental health.
