As we are asked to reexamine and emphasize family values while maintaining a strong economy, America faces a challenge: How do we achieve both? The New Economic Equation Project, instituted by the Radcliffe Public Policy Institute (RPPI), convened conferences of national leaders and focus groups to study this con cem and came to the conclusion that issues of economic change, workplace organization, family health and community vitality are highly Interconnected.

"A thriving economy depends on the successful integration of people's work, family and community," says Paula Rayman, director of RPPI. "America needs new partnerships to create productive workplaces that enhance family and community life."

To create a benchmark against which exeutives can measure the status of their own company in addressing work/family issues, RPPI created The New Economic Equation Ten-Step Guide.

The guide identifies a range of issues that contribute to a family-friendly workplace.

These 10 issues are:

a a livable wage that enables employees to

meet the physical and educational needs of their families;

the chance to join committees or unions in making decisions on how to do their work; a family leave policies for employees to care for children, elderly relatives or disabled spouses;

flexible schedules that help all employees meet outside responsibilities;

opportunities for all employees to participate in community activities;

portable health insurance and retirement plans for all employees;

educational and training programs;

alternatives to full-time jobs, such as job sharing, reduced hours or working from home;

a safe, secure and discrimination-free work environment;

a encouragement for all employees to act on work, family or community policies. …
