* Home Secretary Charles Clarke has announced a toughening of the deportation rules for foreign criminals. He told the Commons on May 4: The presumption should be that deportation will follow unless there are special circumstances why it cannot'

* The Tories are calling for an extension of the school bus system to cut down on road congestion. Party leader David Cameron, announcing a working group on school buses, said: 'If you make it an attractive alternative then people will be quite happy to get out of their cars.'

* Pay talks between universities and the higher education unions are to resume on May 8 after an arbitration hearing at Acas on May 2. Lecturers have been boycotting marking and course assessment since March in pursuit of their pay claim.
