What's Wrong with Nibbling between Meals?

A midday snack can be helpful, right? It can cut down on your appetite for dinner or tide you over to a later dinner.

Don't count on it, say nutrition researchers in France, based on a four-part study with a group of young men. In the first part, the men were given a hearty lunch and dessert. After lunch, in a windowless room with no time cues, the men were allowed to read, listen to music and ask for dinner whenever they felt hungry. Typically, their dinner requests came 6-7 hours later.

In three subsequent sessions, the men were served the same lunch and were also given a 250-calorie snack of toast, jam and cheese at different times during the afternoon-from about 45 minutes to 3 1/2 hours after lunch.

It turned out that no matter when they ate their snack, the men still requested their evening meal 6-7 hours after eating lunch. And when they ate dinner, they ate as many calories as they did when no snack was given. …
