Wolf Works

PORTLAND, OR.... This month Laura Russo Gallery presents new paintings by Oregon-based artist Sherrie Wolf. Wolf creates meticulous, collagelike still lifes that often pay tribute to her heroes from art history while also celebrating her own visions. Her compositions are organized in a style reminiscent of the Vanitas paintings popular in the Netherlands during the 17th century. Demonstrating a sly sense of humor, Wolf is fond of coopting majestic period landscape paintings, like those by Hudson River School artists, and using them as backgrounds for her sumptuous tableaux.

Mood, Light & Shadow

EUGENE, OR.... New paintings by George Kettlewell are on view at Karin Clarke Gallery this month. The Oregon-based watercolorist creates both landscape and still-life works. Kettlewell's moody landscapes capture the terrain and atmosphere that is unique to the Pacific Northwest. The artist's still lifes often depict flowers which seem casually arranged in a glass of water or randomly strewn across a surface. Paintings by Kettlewell, who is known for his ability to capture light and shadow, often have been compared to works by painter Morris Graves.
