* New Transport Secretary Douglas Alexander could be facing the biggest rail stoppage since the general strike in 1926. Thousands of rail staff are to be balloted on industrial action after unions and Network Rail failed to break a deadlock over pensions.

* Community hospitals are set to close as Gloucestershire primary care and NHS trusts struggle with a £38m deficit it was announced on May 10. Stroud's maternity hospital is to close, with all in-patient services to be provided by Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

* Cornwall County Council is set to run a £39.1 m project to improve transport links to the Isles of SdIIy, involving a new freight and passenger boat and the upgrading of St Mary's and Penzance harbours to meet safety standards.
