CARROLLTON MUSLIMS REALIZE THEIR DECADE OLD DREAM FOR A MOSQUE. BY AZHAR AZEEZ

The eight-year wait ended Sept. 23, 2005, when Dr. Abdalla Idris Ali, a former ISNA president and current ISNA Majlis ash-Shura member, stood to deliver the first Friday sermon at the new $2.2 million Islamic Association of Carrollton (TX) Mosque in suburban Dallas.

Between 'asr and isha, more than 600 people attended the inaugural program, which was addressed by several prominent imams, including Dr. Yusuf Ziya Kavacki, imam of the Dallas Central Mosque, and Dallas/Ft. Worth area community leaders. In his keynote address, Dr. Abdalla Idris stressed the importance of establishing Islamic schools and encouraged Muslims to reach out to people of other faiths and educate them about Islam in order to help them better understand our religion. Dr. Kavacki discussed the challenges ahead and how to continue to move forward. Arif Durani, overcome by emotion, thanked God, donors, IAC board members, and volunteers, and said, "It looks like a dream come true." Azhar Azeez, who has served as IAC shura member since 1995, moderated the event. Carrollton Mayor Becky Miller (D) issued a proclamation acknowledging IAC's decade long service and dedicated that Friday as Islamic Association of Carrollton Day.

The dream began in 1991, when Muslim professionals working in the Carrollton area recognized the need for a place to perform the Friday prayer. At that time, the nearest masajid were the Dallas Central Masjid (20 miles away) and the Denton, TX Masjid (23 miles away). Due to the lengthy drive required to attend those masajid, they started holding Friday prayer at various local homes. As word spread and the number of attendees drastically increased, this was no longer a feasible solution. The community acted quickly, and within weeks they rented an office space for the prayer, with prayer attendees donating money to cover the rent. …
