Salt Lake City has become the ninth locality to join American Forests' urban energy-saving program, Cool Communities. The Salt Lake City program was publicly launched over the summer at a ceremony dedication a new affordable housing development. Argyle Court, established by Housing Services, Inc., an affiliate of the National NeighborWorks(R) network, is the first project to showcase the Cool Communities program in the city

Founded in 1992 as a program of AMERICAN FORESTS and the Department of Energy, Cool Communities promotes light-colored surfacing and strategic tree planting to reduce temperatures, energy use, and air pollution in urban areas.

Salt Lake City is the first Cool Community to represent the high plains region of the country As host to the 2002 Winter Olympics, the city will enjoy many of the same opportunities for exposure and education that Atlanta, another Cool Community, has enjoyed over the past two years.
