American Forests Today
Three Honored with Annual AMERICAN FORESTS Awards Each year AMERICAN FORESTS salutes professionals for outstanding contributions to forest science and the forestry community. The contributions of this year's recipients range from the Seventh American Forest Congress to "new forestry" to service with , AMERICAN FORESTS.
Distinguished Service Award
John C. Gordon is this year's recipient of the traditional AMERICAN FORESTS award for distinguished service to forestry and other aspects of resource conservation. The award, available both to members and nonmembers, honors those who have distinguished themselves in their professional activities as legislators, foresters, and other resource professionals.
Gordon, currently Pinchot Professor at Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, served as dean there from 1983 until 1992. Prior to that, he was professor of forest science at Oregon State University, professor of forestry at Iowa State University, and plant physiologist with the USDA Forest Service. He has taught courses in research methods, silviculture, agroforestry, forest physiology and ecology, and leadership. Gordon has chaired numerous national committees on forest policy and research, is president of the International Union of Societies of Foresters, and cochaired the Board of Directors of the Seventh American Forest Congress. Gordon was formerly a member of AMERICAN Fo-ESTs' Board of Directors.
William B. Greeley Award
Established in 1983, the William B. Greeley Award is given annually for major contributions to forest conservation in the area or region in which the recipient lives and works. This year the award goes to Jerry Franklin, professor of ecosystem analysis, College of Forest Resources at the University of Washington in Seattle, Franklin's specialities include the structure and function of natural forest ecosystems, the effects of changing environmental conditions on forest processes, "new forestry," and the theory and applications of landscape ecology. …
