What products will, like the Macarena this year, catch people's fancy in 1997?

Drug Topics surveyed chain and independent pharmacists for their predictions on what they think will be the bestselling products in their stores next year.

Both chain executives and independents ranked new prescription drugs and Rx-to-OTC switches high on their lists of hot sellers for 1997. Chains ranked Rx-toOTC switches No. 1, and independents ranked them No. 3. Independents said new prescription drugs would be their No. 1 sellers, while chains put them at No. 3 on their list.

Among nonprescription products mentioned by independent pharmacists and chain execs were smoking cessation aids, which went OTC this year. H2 antagonists, hot since they first went over the counter last year, are still popular picks for next year. Touted by the popular press as cure-all remedies, health supplements such as DHEA, melatonin, and vitamins were also plugged by many respondents as hot sellers for 1997. About 5% of independent R.Ph.s also mentioned homeopathic and herbal preparations as well as OTC analgesics as hot tickets.

In terms of prescription drugs, some chain executives and independent respondents believe that new AIDS-related drugs and diet medications such as Redux will be prescribed popularly in 1997. …
