Yale Releases New Edition of Perseus CD-ROM

Article excerpt

Yale University Press has just published Perseus 2.0, a new edition of this Greek reference title. When its first version was published in 1992, Perseus, a diverse multimedia resource of primary source materials and supporting reference materials on ancient Greece, was hailed as "remarkable:' "unique," "trailblazing," and "adventurous" by such publications as The Wall Street Journal and Christian Science Monitor. It has since been widely praised as one of the most innovative educational tools published to date, according to Yale University Press.

Published on four CD-ROMs for use with Macintosh computers, the Comprehensive Edition of Perseus 2.0 contains these elements:

* More than 25,000 full-screen images of ancient Greek vases, sculpture, architecture, and sites

* The complete works of 31 ancient authors in Greek with classic English translations from the Loeb Classical Library, representing more than 50 volumes of printed text

* An extensive atlas including schematic, satellite, and topographical maps of ancient and present-day Greece on which nearly 2,000 sites can be plotted

* Detailed catalog entries for 1,420 vases, 366 sculptures and sculptural groups, 523 coins, 387 buildings, and 179 sites, linked to in-depth background essays

* An online version of the Liddell-Scott Intermediate Greek-English Lexicon (35,000 words)

* A hypertextual encyclopedia of major historical and mythological figures, places, and terms

* A collection of secondary resources on Greek vase painters, sculptors, and history, including Caskey and Beazley's vase catalog, Attic Vase Paintings in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

* A chronological summary of the major historical and cultural events from the archaic period to Alexander the Great-with more than 2,000 hypertextual links to the rest of the database

* A bibliographical database with full citations for nearly 3,000 works

Also available is the Concise Edition on only one CD-ROM, which contains the complete textual database as well as a selection of 5,200 full-screen images and all 25,000 images in small format. …
