Sunset's new monthly wine columnist, Karen MacNeil (pictured below), likes to compare some Chardonnays to white shirts from Sears, while others remind her of the picture on a fuzzy TV Bemused? Stay tuned. Our wine coverage is about to change-and expand.

"Wine has finally gotten to me," says Karen. Not in any untoward way. After 15 years of commuting from New York to California's wine country (20 trips a year), Karen has finally made the move into a cabin surrounded by vineyards on the top of Spring Mountain near St. Helena. She has written for the New York Times, Food & Wine, Travel & Leisure, and the Wine Spectator, among many other publications. A teacher at heart, Karen is in the midst of writing The Wine Primer (an encyclopedia) for Workman Publishers. Her "Mastering Wine" course at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone, in Napa, is always sold out.
