Talk skiing and you're usually talking big bucks. But bargainsavvy snowsporters know that good deals are available, especially around Tahoe and in the western Sierra.

Badger Pass. Cross-country skiers have free access to 90 miles of trails and 40 kilometers of machine-set track, including a "skating" lane from the main trailhead near the downhill area out to Glacier Point. (209) 372-1000.

Bear Valley. A Skiing Bears package including an all-day lesson and rentals is free for children 4 through 8 on their birthdays. A copy of the child's birth certificate is required. Ages 6 and under ski free every day. (209) 753-2301.

Boreal. The free Nugget chair lift gives beginners a chance to get their ski legs on easy terrain. (916) 426-3666.

Diamond Peak. Downhill lift tickets are half-price ($18.50) and cross-country trail tickets just $7 every nonholiday Wednesday. (702) 831-3249.

Donner Ski Ranch. Regular prices for lift tickets are the lowest in the Tahoe region ($22, $10 kids and seniors). On nonholiday Tuesdays through Thursdays, tickets cost $15, $5 ages 6 through 12. (916) 426-3635.

Mt. Rose. Nonholiday deals include two-for-one tickets on Tuesdays and a half-price discount on all-day tickets weekdays for season-pass holders from any ski area. …
