Many FIAF members have recently been engaged by new technologies for the restoration of film, which seem to offer a range of new tools for archivists. Rather than displacing the traditional concerns of archivists and curators, however, the prospect of greater power over the image has contributed to a thorough-going re-examination of the traditional values and practices of restoration. The ARCHIMEDIA colloquium of last November featured important interventions by Dominique Païni and Gian Luca Farinelli. And this year's FIAF Congress symposium contained many reflections on archival practice in the wake of ARCHIMEDIA. The historical reflection of our Munich colleague Enno Patalas, which is being presented here in slightly modified form, gives us an evolutionary account of an experience that parallels that of some of the other regional archives and which stands in contradistinction to the development of the autonomous national archives. …
