* The Department for International Development has pledged £4m in humanitarian aid in response to last week's Indonesian earthquake. Two DfID humanitarian experts have also been sent to Indonesia and further financial support to nongovernmental agencies is being considered.

* The Office of Government Commerce has urged government departments to avoid sending their post via the Royal Mail. The chief executive of OGC Buying Solutions, Hugh Barrett, told the Treasury select committee on May 30 that alternative providers could save the government £30m in postal costs.

* Three-quarters of the 1.76 million child trust fund vouchers issued to parents of children born between September 2002 and April 2005 have now been used to open CTF accounts, according to the Revenue & Customs department.

* BBC chair Michael Grade's salary will rise from £82,946 to £140,000 for a four-day week when the board of governors is replaced by a trust structure early next year. …
