Three grants will help preserve Indian art and documents in the latest round of awards under the Save America's Treasures program.

The Huntington Free Library Native American Collection at Cornell University will receive $250,000 to conserve and rehouse native language dictionaries, children's books, travel writings, and voyage and exploration documents.

The University of California, Berkeley, will be awarded $140,000 to conserve a century of American Indian photographs, motion pictures, and sound recordings.

And the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History will be granted $100,000 to conserve ledger books of nineteenth-century Kiowa and Cheyenne artwork, depicting battles, hunts, and ceremonies.

Two of the eleven of this year's grants will help preserve documents relating to George Washington's early military career. The Virginia Historical Society will receive $78,289 to preserve the papers of Robert Dinwiddie, who as the British Crown lieutenant governor of Virginia sent Washington on a factfinding mission in 1753 on the eve of the French and Indian War. The Society of the Cincinnati has been awarded $67,000 to clean and rehouse thirty-three orderly books from the American Revolution on the daily activities of soldiers.

The remaining grants include $250,000 to the Office of Commonwealth Libraries in Harrisburg to conserve a Pennsylvania General Assembly reference collection; $250,000 to the Pennsylvania State Archives to conserve a collection of Civil War muster rolls; $132,000 to the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation to digitize and rehouse its archives; $127,249 to Michigan State University to conserve and rehouse fifteen hundred nineteenth-century textbooks and Sunday school books; $100,000 to the University of Illinois at Chicago to rehouse correspondence and artifacts documenting the Chicago Urban League's history; and $60,000 to the American Antiquarian Society to conserve and rehouse a collection of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American newspapers. …
