THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT

I really appreciated "Get Shorty" [May 2006]. As a 5-foot-4-inch-tall gay man I can say it has been no picnic as society at large has gone out of its way to make me feel inferior. Studies show that neither straight women nor gay men are inclined to go for a short man. Somehow, it's OK for women to be short. My theory is that the incessant negative vibes from the tall majority either make us short men into swaggering, quarrelsome Napoleons or else we develop a huge inferiority complex (yes, I do feel invisible in the bar scene; so thank goodness for my partner of 19 years). Yet it is difficult to radiate a sense of confidence when society brands you as an undesirable. It's nice to know that finally there are one or two arenas where we may be appreciated.
