The information in this department is provided by Information Resources Inc. (IRI), a marketing research and software company based in Chicago. The sales data on specific OTC and HBC categories are based on scanning data collected from drugstores, food stores, and mass-merchandiser outlets. IRI's data for this report are collected from a sample of 2,700 supermarkets, 500 drugstores, and 250 mass-merchandisers.

The denture products category experienced only a minor gain of 0.6% in total dollar sales and a slight drop of 1.2% in total unit sales in all retail outlets during the 52 weeks ending Nov. 3, 1996. Although total dollar sales for this category were highest in drugstores, mass-merchandisers demonstrated the highest unit sales during this time period. While dollar and unit sales remained high in drugstores in this category and in many of the subcategories that comprise it, drugstores seemed to be losing ground in this category. Dollar sales and unit sales declined in drugstores and food stores in many cases while rising in mass-merchandising outlets. …
