Last October, information professionals everywhere gathered at the Omni Shorham in Washington DC for the ONLINE WORLD Conference and Expo of '96. This premier annual event offered three days filled with seminars, exhibits, demonstrations, and discussions which emphasized the practical use of online and Internet content for the benefit of knowledge workers and professionals worldwide.

The Opening Session's Industry Announcements and Demonstrations provided attendees with a fast-paced, high-tech combination of the new online/Internet products and services that represent cutting-edge developments in the online industry. The "editor's choice selection of companies that took the stage to announce their products consisted of Knight-Ridder information, Amulet, Information Access Company, Reuters NewMedia, Dow Jones Business Information Services, LEXIS-NEXIS, Paracel, EBSCO Publishing, and Derwent/Microsoft.

Keynote speaker David Churbuck, Senior Editor of Computing and Communications at Forbes, presented the attendees with his views on electronic publishing, inclding the realities of production, the challenges of an interactive medium, and the opportunities and pitfalls that electronic journalism presents to both the producers and consumers.

The Exhibit Hall featured a large display of online services and products for information users including online and Internet products for knowledge workers, online professionals, and people in business, media, technology, and the professions. Attendees used this opportunity to speak with representatives and gather information, while the CyberSalon gave attendees hands-on time to visit Internet sites and view software that was mentioned during the conference.

Concurrent Sessions dealt specifically with issues such as Internet trends and technologies, intranets, information strategies, and using online for competitive intelligence. …
