It all started on a gondola in Italy. We were on our family vacation in August 2004 when I learned that Hudson Street Press was interested in my book proposal. I needed to get a sample chapter to them right away. I must have felt very inspired floating on that gondola through magnificent Venice, because I took my BlackBerry out of my purse and the opening chapter began to flow through my thumbs. Thus started a funny vacation ritual: I'd write on my BlackBerry whenever inspiration hit during the day, and at dinner I'd read aloud what I wrote. If my husband, Bob, and the kids laughed or cried, I'd send off the segment. If not, I'd work on it some more the next day-on the open-air bus in Rome, in line at the Duomo in Florence-multitasking a book for the ultimate multitaskers! …
