Are you looking forward to summer with a combination of excitement and dread? With all that daylight and all those nonschool hours to fill, summertime is challenging for working moms in hundreds of ways. But it's also a huge opportunity for family fun and personal growth.

My love of gardening, for example, started as a way to fill up some of those great summer Saturdays when the kids were young. In spring, we'd get out their pint-size shovels and prepare the "Roundy Garden," as we call the flower bed that used to be a silo. Julia made a ritual out of burying her feet in the cold, moist dirt every year. Then in June, Robert and Julia would spend hours at the Millwood Garden Center picking out treasured flowers-pink cosmos, orange marigolds, bloodred snapdragons-to fill in the concentric circles. …
