In an announcement made last month at Online Information 96 in London, Financial Times Information, KnightRidder Information, and Dow Jones & Company, Inc. indicated they would pursue a major project for the co-development of an authoritative global news resource for corporate, research, government, and academic customers. The three companies intend to erect a comprehensive global collection of published material that will be fundamentally useful to people conducting business research.

The companies are assembling an online news resource containing information from the major newspapers, news magazines, and trade publications across the globe. According to the companies, the result will be to provide information that is as comprehensive as possible, with particular attention to overcoming the current scarcity of information from the world's emerging markets-whether in Eastern Europe, the nations of the former Soviet Union, Africa, Latin America, Asia, or the Pacific Rim. Additionally, the companies plan to add over 2 million articles annually. The information resource will be distributed independently through the companies' respective electronic information services beginning in mid1997.

A data collection center will be established in London where a dedicated team of information professionals, many of them experienced linguists, will collate information for distribution through the three companies' respective electronic information services. Financial Times Information will operate the facility on behalf of the participating companies.

"We are excited about the opportunity to create an unparalleled business research resource through the combined efforts of three of the world's leading information companies," said Jeff Galt, president of Knight-Ridder Information. …
