Western Digital Corp., based in Irvine, California, weighed the pros and cons of offering Internet access to its 10,000 employees worldwide. As told in the December 1996 cover story of PERSONNEL JOURNAL, the benefits to internal communications and customer service won out. HR worked with information services to develop the following guidelines for access and use.

1.0 Purpose

The purpose of the Internet Access Policy is to provide Western Digital personnel with a tool to support the business objectives of the Western Digital Corp.

2.0 Scope

This document applies to all Western Digital employees and contractors accessing the Internet through corporate information systems.

3.0 Terms and Definitions

5.0 Responsibilities

5.1 It is the responsibility of WDC employees and contractors to: Provide reasonable business justification for access to the Internet. Read, sign and return the Employee / Management Agreement Form to the IS Helpdesk (x26100).

Obtain an access approval signature from management. Represent WDC in a professional manner while on the Internet. Report any issues with WDC on the Internet to the appropriate personnel. Adhere to WDC's commitment to Software Asset Management. Work within Western Digital's Corporate Conduct Policy. Refrain from advertising WDC's products and services. Report any violation of security to management. Report any and all software acquired via the Internet to the appropriate party.

5.2 It is the responsibilities of Western Digital Management to:

Validate a request for access. Facilitate a one-over-one signature (i.e., acquire a next-level signature). Approve in writing an employee or contractor's request for access. Take responsibility for any and all incurred costs associated with access. Communicate any violations or discrepancies to the appropriate parties. Ensure the competency of the employee to use the Internet appropriately and effectively.

5.3 It is the responsibility of IS/DTG to:

Provide connectivity to the Internet. Provide necessary software tools. Provide metrics on usage. Provide support for system/software related issues.

5.4 It is the responsibility of Human Resources to: Provide council to management on possible misuse of the Internet.

6.0 Policy

6.1 Internet access will be provided to all Western Digital personnel based on business justification and the meeting of technical requirements. Signed authorization by management will signify justification. Management reserves the right to terminate access at any time.

6.2 Information traveling through Western Digital's gateway to the Internet is not secure. Therefore, the sending or public posting of confidential materials outside of Western Digital is prohibited. In accordance with state and federal law, unauthorized attempts to access secure internal or external resources is prohibited.

6.3 We also are expected to observe and follow laws governing our operations, competing fairly and using Corporate resources only for legitimate purposes. …
