We've Seen the Future, and It Is You

It's more clear than ever that HR really is, at last, the most crucial business function of all. It all comes down to people, and you are the trustees of your corporate futures.

Suddenly, HR really did seem to be the center of the universe. We were in the final stages of working on this issue, and all over the office I heard people talking about HR in ways I had never heard before. Near the copier, people were proposing postage stamps honoring HR's contributions. In the conference room, the editorial staff imagined a summer blockbuster starring Harrison Ford as an intrepid HR professional rescuing a kidnapped expat and even pondered the possibilities of "HR-The Musical."

It was nothing more than good, stressrelieving fun, of course. But it also told me that the staff had embraced this particular issue and took more pride in it than any work we've ever done.

The foundation of that pride is our 75th anniversary. You can't reach such a milestone without pausing to reflect, and it has been exhilarating to remember that we've been serving the HR community from the beginning, before it was called HR or anyone thought that there might be a community. We helped American business meet the challenges of the Great Depression and World War II, the civil rights movement and the women's movement, the information revolution and the booming global marketplace. Most importantly, we helped lead the transformation of the administrative personnel function that existed until the early '90s to the strategic business partner that it is today. I'm proud that we were among the first to anticipate that change and to advocate for it-before other business media, even before HR's own professional associations.

We've marked the occasion-as I hope you've noticed-by changing our name to WORKFORCE. Discarding a name with so much name recognition and credibility behind it isn't easy, but the new name better reflects who we are and how we help. …
