Pharmacy Staff Wins Texas-Size Lottery

When Texas launched its Lotto game several years ago, pharmacist Jim Ater told his wife that someday they'd win the big one. The day after Christmas, his prediction came true to the tune of a $36 million jackpot he is sharing with four employees of the Fort Worth pharmacy he coowns.

The quintet at A & P Pharmacy consulted lawyers and set up a trust fund that banked the first of 25 annual installments of $1,460,149 last month. Besides Ater, technicians Justin Pratz and Jenny Willis shared the prize, along with another tech and a delivery driver who decided to stay out of the limelight. Each winner will get about $288,000 a year, before taxes.

The pharmacy crew had a habit of buying lottery tickets when the prize money got really interesting, Ater said. On Dec. 26, the day of the drawing, they decided to get in on the game. The driver picked up the tickets, which were then, as usual, stashed away in a safe place. …
