Meridian Releases Two New CDs

Article excerpt

Meridian Education Corporation has announced the publication of The Reference Reference CD-ROM, a research resource for grades four to eight.

According to Meridian, children work off an intuitive, game-like interface with actual bells and whistles. The Reference Reference helps students click from one bookshelf to the next. Along the way, they can explore general references, such as encyclopedias, almanacs, English dictionaries, quote books, and thesauri; subject references, such as history books, foreign language dictionaries, pop culture fact books, and style manuals; geographical references, such as travel guides or world and historical atlases; biographical references in general or subject-oriented volumes; and nonprint references, such as CD-ROMs and online rescues.

For each type of book covered, The Reference Reference lets students know what kind of information the book may contain, how the information is arranged, tips on using reference materials, and more. Plus, a continuously changing window lets kids see sample pages of every reference mentioned. Narration follows the onscreen text, so youngsters can read along or keep an eye on the sample book pages as they appear. Students learn when to use the various reference books, as well as what kind of navigational tools within them will lead to further information.

Available on a hybrid disc that runs on both PC and Macintosh systems, The Reference Reference can be ordered from Meridian Education for $49.

Meridian Education has also announced the CD-ROM version of The Children's Dictionary of Occupations, which is aimed at grades two to six and lets young computer users explore more than 300 ways to make a living. …
