WOODWORK after Women and Dog by Marisol

They are emerging from wood,

Not in the way nymphs

Do from trees,

But in a struggle,

As if they are entombed.

There are three women, A girl, and a dog.

No one has arms but the girl.

Two of the women have a hand

To hold things: a purse and the dog's chain,

The girl's shoulder.

The dog has four feet.

The woman with one hand,

A purse, and a dog

Has three overlapping faces;

The woman, on the other end,

Touching the girl's shoulder,

Has four.

The woman in the middle

Has a tiny face

Attached to a large, round

Wooden head.

Her pink breasts

Are the most striking

Thing about her.

They are women on the move,

Each with a left foot forward,

Although the dog is ahead

On end table feet, emerging,

Like a submarine commander,

Out of the white, square hole of self. …
