* The number of nursing posts at risk due to NHS deficits has now risen to 18,000, according to the Royal College of Nursing. These posts include threatened redundancies and deleted vacancies. General Secretary Beverly Malone said cuts were 'reactionary'and would hurt the quality of patient care.

* Communities and Local Government Secretary Ruth Kelly has urged Muslim leaders to do more to combat extremism in talks during which, she said, there had been 'sharp' and 'challenging' exchanges. She spent three hours with community leaders on August 15 in the wake of the airline terror alert.

* Britain is to put an extra £6m towards relief efforts in Lebanon after the ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel. International Development Secretary Hilary Benn said food, water and medical supplies were urgently needed.

* Fourteen prison officers at Pentonville in North London have been suspended from duty over allegations of corruption, believed to centre on trafficking in mobile phones and cannabis. …
