THE MAN WHO GAVE MADONNA HER BLONDE AMBITION WANTS TO BRING OPERA TO THE MASSES

Vincent Paterson knows his way around divas. After all, he directed and choreographed Madonna in her Blonde Ambition tour. But the D word is used so liberally these days that it's easy to forget its roots are in opera. So it's not surprising that Paterson, who as a choreographer has already tackled pop (Michael Jackson's Bad tour), film (Evita, The Birdcage), Broadway (Tony nominated for Kiss of the Spider Woman), and TV (an Emmy nomination for In Search of Dr. Seuss, which he also directed), will helm Manon at the LA Opera this fall, with superstars Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazon (left) and conducted by Placido Domingo. "I love divas," Paterson says, "pop or classical. And opera is about the only medium I haven't tasted. I feel I can contribute a lot to bringing opera to a younger and broader audience as well as satisfy the aficionados. So what's next for the man who seems to have done it all? "I'm keeping my fingers crossed about directing a Cirque du Soleil project," he says. …
