Mélies project (George Eastman House)

The International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House is planning an exhibition on the life and work of Georges Mélies, to be held in Rochester, New York on the summer 1991. The collection of Mélies' production stills in the Film Department at GEH is one of the largest in the world, and has never been publicly exhibited. One major aspect in Mélies' work, not yet analyzed in depth, is his making of still images for pre-production and publicity purposes. For the first time, a filmmaker decided to keep track systematically of sets, decors, scenes and trick apparatuses from his films for future reference - a strategy which was bound to become a standard procedure in the later Hollywood studio system. The exhibition will concentrate on the aesthetics and historical relevance of these materials, supporting the still images with an extensive screening program of films made by Méliès between 1896 and 1912. The project is a part of a GEH program of initiatives towards the celebration of the centennial of cinema.
