Many companies' internal audit departments expect staff members to transfer to other financial positions after a few years in the audit department. Providing long-term career opportunities helps attract high quality people to the audit department, which in turn makes the audit department an excellent source of financial talent for the company. The suggestions below were offered to audit directors concerned about finding attractive transfer opportunities for their staff.

* Write audit reports that reflect a broad understanding of the businesses being examined. Recommendations which simply list procedural errors do not demonstrate understanding, constructive suggestions do.

* Be the first source of help when an operating unit needs financial staff assistance. Providing staff to cope with illnesses or unusual workloads gives auditors an opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities in line positions and keeps the department abreast of new positions if the short-term need becomes a full-time position.

* Help operating units recruit staff. Auditors usually know more members of the financial staff than anyone else in the unit. The advantages, if not abused, are obvious.

* Promptly counsel staff members who do not have excellent prospects for a successful career at your company. …
